Ventura County homeowners are asking a variety of questions about tree services, reflecting concerns about safety, legal responsibilities, costs, and proper tree care. Based on the context of our region’s climate, regulations, and common issues, here are the key questions Ventura County is asking:

Who is responsible for tree trimming or removal?

Many homeowners are looking for clarity on whether they, their neighbors, or the city are responsible for maintaining trees, especially when trees are on property lines, near power lines, or on public property. In Ventura County, homeowners are responsible for trees on their private property (of course).

Note that The Ventura County Tree Protection Ordinance requires permits for pruning beyond specified limits or removing protected trees (e.g., oaks and sycamores 9.5 inches or larger in circumference, or trees 90 inches or larger).

How can I get a public tree in front of my home pruned or removed?

Trees on public property in Ventura County are the responsibility of The City of Ventura’s Urban Forestry Program.  The program manages 30,000 public trees, with a six-year pruning cycle. Residents may inquire if a specific tree qualifies for removal (e.g., due to sidewalk damage) or when their street’s trees will be pruned.  The City of Ventura allows requests for new trees on public property, but roots from prior trees need a year to decay. Residents may ask about this process or available tree species.

Who should I call for emergency tree removal after a storm?

With Southern California’s severe winter storms and high winds, residents  are likely to need to inquire about emergency services for fallen or hazardous trees 24/7. Ventura Tree Services offers this service.

What can be done about Indian Laurel fig trees causing problems in Ventura County?

Ventura is actively removing problematic Indian Laurel fig trees, replacing them with better-suited species. Residents likely ask about removal timelines or replacement options.

How do I deal with oakworm caterpillars affecting my oak trees?

Oakworm caterpillars (Phryganidia californica) are a native pest impacting Ventura’s Coast Live Oaks. Residents may ask about managing infestations or whether damage is severe enough to warrant removal.

What’s the best way to treat tree diseases or insect infestations?

Companies like Ventura Tree Services emphasize treating insect and disease issues to avoid tree removal. Residents may ask about specific treatments for pests or diseases affecting local species.

Does Ventura Tree Services handle stump grinding, and how does it work?

Stump grinding is a commonly requested service, using machines to reduce stumps to wood chips. Ventura County Residents often ask about costs, depth (e.g., up to 24 inches below ground), and whether grinding is better than full stump removal.

Many of these questions reflect Ventura County’s unique environmental, regulatory, and climatic context. For precise answers, residents can contact Ventura Tree Services  or the City of Ventura’s Urban Forestry office  at 805-667-6519.

How can I find a reputable tree service provider?

When speaking with a tree service provider, questions should focus on identifying licensed, insured, and certified arborists to avoid problems including liability issues. Homeowners should also verify contractors’ licenses and insurance due to California laws that could hold them liable for injuries if unlicensed workers are hired. Homeowners should check reviews, the number  of years of experience companies have, and whether providers adhere to the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) standards. Finallly, ask about the scope of services provided (e.g., pruning, removal, stump grinding) and how providers handle cleanup after the job is completed.

What are the risks of improper tree care?

Homeowners often ask us about questionable practices such as tree topping. Tree topping and other bad practices can be harmful and can weaken trees. They also ask about the consequences of neglecting trees, including such concerns as falling branches causing injury or property damage, and how they can avoid fines for violating local ordinances, like those protecting native trees in Ventura County.

How does tree maintenance affect property value and safety?

Homeowners in Ventura County often ask how proper tree care can enhance property value.  Well-maintained trees potentially increase home value significantly. They also inquire about identifying trees that are or could become hazardous (e.g., dead, dying, or unstable trees) and how regular maintenance can prevent risks like trees falling during storms or wildfires, which are a concern in high-fire-risk areas.

How do I handle trees near power lines or in high-fire-risk areas?

With Southern California’s constant wildfire risks, homeowners often want to know about managing trees near power lines or in high-fire-risk zones. SCE or other utilities will trim or remove hazardous trees for free.  The utilities themselves help to ensure compliance with state fire safety regulations, which include things like maintaining clearances around power lines.

What drought-tolerant tree options and care tips can Ventura Tree Services suggest?

Given California’s drought conditions, homeowners ask often which tree species are drought-tolerant.  Two such species are  the Golden Rain Tree and Common Hackberry.  Ventura Tree Services can help you care for trees using minimal water. We can also provide advice on protecting trees from pests such as the South American palm weevil, which is a growing threat in the region.

These questions reflect Ventura County California’s homeowners’ focus on balancing aesthetics, safety, and compliance with local laws while managing trees in a drought-prone, fire-risk region. Contact Ventura Tree Services If you’d like.  We can provide more specific details on any of these topics or provide additional real-time information to address a specific concern.

We are tree care experts servicing the City of Ventura and the City of Oxnard, City of Port Hueneme, as well as the rest of Ventura County.  We service both residential and commercial tree projects.

Commercial Tree Services

Business owners want professional tree care and landscaping just like residential clients. We work closely with both residential and commercial owners as well as property managers of real estate. Tree services needed on rental property, multifamily or office parks may not be a first thought or first budget item for managers of commercial properties. However, they are well aware of what an asset well-developed trees can be for property resale or just curb appeal. If you manage commercial properties of any kind, please contact us to discuss your tree services needs.

Residential Tree Services

Trimming tree limbs is done for a variety of reasons. When Ventura Tree Services prunes trees, we deliver to clients healthier and better looking trees. In nature, trees grow very naturally without trimming or pruning. However, routine landscape tree maintenance allows your trees to reach their full potential as a part of your property, and live a long life. This includes the care of palm trees. One area of tree care that we see very often are disputes between neighbors over tree location or overhang of foliage. We recommend trying to work out the issues with your neighbor and not resort to the courts (including small claims court).

Tree Pruning

Landscape maintenance and pruning for appearance combines to create the ideal tree shape. By having Ventura Tree Services pruning and trimming trees in specific ways, we can control the expanse of the foliage. For some trees, we can encourage flowering and the production of fruit through the proper trimming and pruning. We can also shape trees in specific shapes and control the height of the tree. If we are called upon to prune / trim trees for reasons of tree health, we typically focus on the removing dead branches, as well as branches that are dying from disease or are endangered from rubbing  against the trunk or other branches. We will also remove branch stubs to allow the the tree to continue to grow in a healthy manner. Trimming down the top, or canopies of trees, which is called "tree lacing," allows air and light to penetrate beyond the top foliage. Tree lacing allows foliage lower on the tree or on adjacent trees to receive the sunlight and air they need to produce food for the tree. We are the "tree trimming near me" solution.

We recommend that a tree maintains one main trunk and and a few dominant branches. Things like suckers which sprout at or near ground level can weaken the wood of the tree and can redirect water and nutrients away from the main trunk of the tree. By removing extraneous branches and suckers or "water sprouts," we can create a stronger tree which will be able to stand up to the winter storms and high winds that we have here in Ventura County Top heavy trees with too much foliage can fall down in high winds or storms. Falling branches and whole trees can easily damage other trees or plants or even a house, car, or other property below.

Certified Arborist

A tree consultation with a certified arborist is not necessary for every tree job, but the arborist's strong knowledge of trees, their care and health can offer educated opinions upon which to make decisions as a property owner. A certified arborist can also advise on specific diseases, fungus, and insect infestation. They can also warn you of coming threats and what signs to look for.  Whether you are replacing a tree or planting in a new location, we install trees to achieve maximum growth, health and long life. With the assistance of our certified arborists, Ventura Tree Services can help you select the right tree for your property location. We can even offer you our own hand-selected tree from a local Ventura County nursery. You can prevent long term problems and the cost of those problems by using our services to establish your tree in the correct way. This will allow the tree to achieve its full potential.

Tree Removal

Often, when a tree becomes overgrown, struggles to thrive, is afflicted by rot, or dies, we often advise tree removal. We have a lot of experience in the logistics and art of tree removal.  And once the problem tree has been taken down, we can grind down the stump for permanent removal, precluding any returning sprouts. Whether you tree is large or small, we are equipped and able to remove it.

Other Services

We are locally owned and operated, available to take appointments 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  We strive to be prompt, reasonable, thorough, pleasant and neat. If your tree is near a power line, you might want to take the easier and cheaper route of calling up your area's electrical power provider rather than a tree trimming service, like us. Many electrical companies will not charge to come out and trim trees near their power lines. It is safer for a power company to cut near the power lines than for a tree service to do it. Check your tree's location. If the branches are close to, or are actually touching an electrical power line, it’s worth calling your local electrical power company.  We also provide the following services:  Tree Shaping, Artistic Pruning, Stump Removal, Hedge Trimming, Landscape & Planting, Chipper Service, Fruit Tree Pruning, Palm Tree Skinning, Land Clearing, View Clearing, Fire Clearing, Fast Response Time
